********************************
Short Sunderland Mk.V ML797 "Papa" is the last aircraft of its type to serve with Royal Air Force (RAF). It served under 205 Squadron and stationed in RAF Seletar, Singapore.
During Malayan Emergency, ML797 "Papa" carried out hundreds of sorties against Malayan Communists, using its long endurance. It could patrol above the jungle for hours.
Its last flight was flew around Singapore with the Commander in Chief for Far East and his guests onbroad on 15th May 1959. Which may explain the 3 stars on the front door.
The aircraft was hauled out of water and subjected to a formal ceremony, in which a Guard of Honour was present, with a paying off pennant displayed attached to its tail on 20 May 1959.
After ML797 "Papa" was brought ashore, along with its sisters, they were refurbish and put storage while waiting for preservation. The order to preserve never arrive. Their engines and equipment are removed and the hulls sold as scrap metal to the locals.
